| Excerpt | Abstract: The M. C. Sutzu collection (Numismatic Department, Library of the Romanian Academy) is indisputably one of the most significant in terms of ancient numismatics, and the example that would be presented here is no exception. The description of the coin under discussion was written in the registry of the Numismatic Cabinet of the Romanian Academy on the 5th of December 1921. It was issued by Nikopolis ad Istrum at the beginning of Macrinus’ reign (Statius Longinus, April-June/August 217 AD) and bears the image of mountain-god Haemus on the reverse, an image with an impressive story behind it. The current study presents the origins of this representation, shedding light on the complex interplay between mythological narratives and monetary iconography, which can go beyond any expectations. Rezumat: Colecţia M. C. Sutzu (Cabinetul Numismatic, Biblioteca Academiei Române) este indiscutabil una dintre cele mai semnificative în materie de numismatică antică, iar piesa prezentată aici nu face excepţie. Descrierea ei a fost notată în Registrul inventar al Cabinetului Numismatic pe data de 5 decembrie 1921. Moneda a fost emisă de Nikopolis ad Istrum la începutul domniei lui Macrinus (Statius Longinus, aprilie-iunie/august 217 d. Hr.) şi are pe revers imaginea zeului montan Haemus, o imagine cu o interesantă poveste. Studiul de faţă prezintă originile acestei reprezentări, punând în lumină îmbinarea iconografiei monetare cu mitologia, care poate depăşi orice aşteptare. |
