Excerpt Preliminary anthopological data on the human remains from St. Sava cemetery (University Square, Bucharest).
The archaeological excavations from University Square (Bucharest) unearthed 676 graves of the Saint Sava Church dated to the 16th-19th centuries. Anthropological analyses of the human bones identified 491 adults and 133 nonadults; there are 149 females, 236 males and 239 indeterminate. The presence of dental pathologies, enamel hypoplasia, cribra cranii and cribra orbitalia, osteoarthrosis and osteoperiostitis was noted. Injuries following accidents were identified on 44 skeletons while trauma caused by violence was noted on 40 skeletons. Also, seven individuals showed traces of syphilis infection and four of tuberculosis . We also noted the presence of Russian soldiers from the Crimean War who had suffered surgical interventions. An interesting case of military violence is the grave 1-3 containing three commingled skeletons.
